My name is Jessika Bouvier and I am an Honors Mentorship student currently attending Flowery Branch High School. I will graduate this coming May, and will attend Emory University in the fall of 2015. I will be a dual major in Creative Writing and Economics, and I plan to continue my involvement with journalism by writing for the school's associated newspaper, the Emory Wheel.
My mentorship experience began beneath the tutelage of William Sykes, a lawyer in the Gainesville, GA area. After several weeks of interning at his firm I realized that law was simply outside of my realm of interest, and I decided to pursue my other primary interest: writing. I began my internship with The Gainesville Times and The Paper of Flowery Branch in October of 2014, and since then my love for the written word has only deepened. In addition to my involvement with my mentorship, I spend much of (little) free time reading and writing. The History of Love by Nicole Krauss is my favorite novel and E.E. Cummings is my favorite poet. I won't claim that I've always known that I wanted to be a writer, but near the end of my eighth grade year it seemed to be one of the few things for which I held a natural affinity. Homewrecker, a jumbled narrative that I turned in as an assignment for my eighth grade English class, was the first "piece" that got me noticed. My teacher begged me to submit the essay into the Young Georgia Authors' Competition, and much to my surprise I went on to win state with what I originally considered just another assignment. Since that time I've only continued to build upon what I know and strive to learn more about sophisticated writing with each passing day. I began writing a novel in the fall of 2013, and I hope to have it completed and published before I graduate college. |
